This blog is about Arab – mostly Egyptian – intellectuals caught up in situations of social and political crisis leading to revolutionary change. As indicated by the title, the main concern is here for the intellectuals representing the higher culture, the Pachas and the Beks, torn appart between their material affiliation to the State power and their symbolic claims of independence and freedom. It’s about those moments when the contradictions hidden in the depths of in his identity come into surface : the gatekeeper of the symbolic order and its contester, the interpreter of a revolution and its actor, the guardian of the order and the agent to change. It’s about intellectuals acting under revolutionary pressure.
